Untamed Alaska: An Expedition into the Great White Silence

Vancouver • Cruising Queen Charlotte Sound • Misty Fjords • Klawock • Chatham Strait • Icy Strait • Icy Bay • Valdez • Prince William Sound • Whittier • Anchorage

Set sail from vibrant Vancouver aboard the expedition ship MS Roald Amundsen and journey deep into Alaska’s wild coastal frontier, cruising through the wildlife-rich Queen Charlotte Sound and onward into remote fjords like Misty Fjords, where waterfalls and bears define the landscape. Explore cultural heritage in Klawock, then sail the whale-filled channels of Chatham Strait and Icy Strait. Discover glaciers and towering peaks around Icy Bay and the historic recovery story of Valdez, before experiencing the dramatic icefields of Prince William Sound. The journey concludes in scenic Whittier—a once-in-a-lifetime expedition blending glaciers, wildlife, and raw wilderness into one unforgettable Arctic adventure.

Day 1: Vancouver
Flight from London Heathrow Airport To Vancouver International Airport
Stay at The Sutton Place Hotel Vancouver for 2 Nights

Day 3: Vancouver
Your adventure starts in Vancouver. A bustling and beautiful seaport city set against steep mountains. Your expedition ship, MS Roald Amundsen, awaits you at the pier. Settle in and take your time to get to know the ship before listening to the safety briefing.

Day 4: Cruising Queen Charlotte Sound
Look out for marine wildlife as you cruise the Inside Passage along the coastal route through the Great North American Pacific Fjordland, a protected stretch of water more than 930 miles long. You sail beyond the sheltered fjords into open waters, travelling through Queen Charlotte Sound and Hecate Strait on a full day at sea, with your passage partly shielded from the open ocean by the island of Haida Gwaii. As you journey through these rich waters, keep watch for an abundance of marine life, including humpback whales, orcas, fin whales, minke whales, and Pacific white-sided dolphins.

Day 5: Misty Fjords
Revel in a wilderness where wildlife thrives in Misty Fjords, part of the Tongass National Forest and a pristine landscape of evergreen trees, roaring waterfalls, and snowcapped peaks that John Muir once described as one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen. Weather permitting, you join the Expedition Team to tour Misty Fjords in small expedition boats or explore by kayak, immersing yourself in this remote environment. As you explore, scan the shores and forests for black and brown bears and moose, while the surrounding waters may reveal Pacific salmon, otters, Steller sea lions, harbour seals, orcas, and Dall's porpoises. Looking skyward, you might also spot herons and majestic bald eagles soaring above.

Day 6: Klawock
Today, you visit Klawock, beautifully situated on the western shore of Prince of Wales Island, a small town with a population of around 700 that is known for its impressive array of totem poles. A centre for Tlingit culture, the original name of the island was Taan, meaning sea lion, and at the Totem Park, you see 21 exquisitely carved examples, including replicas of originals that once stood in the winter village of Tuxecan.

Day 7: Chatham Strait
Start your day looking out for whales in the pristine waters of Frederick Sound. Today is an exploration day, so the Captain and Expedition Team use their expertise to choose the best destination based on the conditions. You may head out in expedition boats to investigate secluded coves and forested shorelines along the 150-mile-long Chatham Strait, or enjoy opportunities for kayaking if conditions allow. Wherever you explore, keep a close lookout for wildlife, as bald eagles, bears, and humpback whales are often spotted throughout this rich and scenic region.

Day 8: Icy Strait
Embrace the thrill of wild Alaska as you sail into Icy Strait for another day of exploration, taking a closer look at the surrounding islands and islets while conditions and wildlife activity guide the choice of destination. Using expedition boats, you may approach rugged rocky shores with the possibility of a landing and nature walk, discovering a coastline that becomes increasingly dramatic closer to the open sea with striking pinnacles and sea caves. As you explore this raw and scenic region, keep watch for whales, sea lions, orcas, and bald eagles that are often seen here.

Day 9: Icy Bay
Spot wildlife in these glacier-fed waters as you spend a day exploring Icy Bay, where three glaciers-Guyot, Yahtse, and Tyndall- feed ice into the bay, giving it its name. If conditions allow, you explore in small expedition boats or by kayak, fully immersing yourself in the icy landscape. From Icy Bay, you can admire the striking jagged Mt. St Elias, known for its steep vertical relief and standing over 18,000 feet, making it the second tallest peak in the US and the third tallest in the US and Canada. As you navigate the Gulf of Alaska, keep a lookout for wildlife, including humpback whales, orcas, sea otters, and harbour seals that are commonly seen in these rich waters.

Day 10: Valdez
Learn about the rich history of Valdez as you explore a region once known for the Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989, which has since made a remarkable recovery through extensive clean-up efforts, showing how ecosystems can heal. A visit to the Valdez Museum offers exhibits on Native Alaskan art and culture, artifacts from the Gold Rush era, and insights into the history of Alaska's Bush Pilots. As you travel around the area, keep an eye out for wildlife, including beavers, moose, and bears that inhabit the surrounding landscapes.

Day 11: Prince William Sound
Get ready to experience nature's raw power on a day dedicated to glaciers in Prince William Sound, home to 150 glaciers, including 17 remarkable tidewater glaciers. Your Captain selects the best location based on conditions to ensure both safety and the most spectacular views. You get as close as possible to these rivers of ice, either from small expedition boats in the fjord or by kayak if conditions allow. From the water, keep watch for wildlife such as humpback whales, bald eagles, otters, and harbour seals, all thriving in this icy and dramatic wilderness.

Day 12: Whittier
Your Alaskan expedition comes to an end in the small gateway town of Whittier. Nestled at the head of Passage Canal and surrounded by dramatic mountains and waterfalls, Whittier was originally developed as a strategic military port during WWII. After disembarking MS Roald Amundsen, you take with you incredible memories of tidewater glaciers, rich Tlingit heritage, and the diverse wildlife of the Great Land.
