Day 1: Budapest, Hungary
Flight from London Airports to Budapest Ferihegy International Airport
Welcome to Hungary! Your journey begins in the vibrant capital of Budapest, often called the "Queen of the Danube." Upon arrival, you will step aboard your luxurious river cruise ship and settle into your elegant stateroom. Take some time to explore the ship's premium amenities, relax on the sun deck, or capture your first photos of the city's breathtaking riverside architecture. As evening approaches, join your fellow travellers, Captain, and crew for a warm welcome cocktail reception. This is followed by a specially prepared dinner on board, setting the tone for an unforgettable week of fine dining and scenic cruising ahead.
Day 2: Bratislava, Slovakia
Arrive in Bratislava, the charming capital of Slovakia, where royal legacies seamlessly blend with modern riverside views. You can choose how to explore this historic city with Am Waterways' curated shore excursions. Opt for a guided walking tour through the cobblestone streets of the Old Town, taking in landmark sights like the medieval Michael's Gate and the majestic Bratislava Castle, looking down from above. If you prefer to stay active, embark on a guided hike up to the castle grounds for sweeping panoramic views of the Danube. Afterwards, enjoy some free time to sample timeless local flavours, browse boutique shops, or relax in a cosy café before returning to the ship.
Day 3: Melk, Austria
Today, your cruise glides through the stunning, UNESCO-designated Wachau Valley, a region famed for its rolling vineyard-clad hills, historic villages, and castle ruins. Your destination is Melk, home to one of Europe's most spectacular Baroque masterpieces: Melk Abbey. Join a guided tour of this magnificent Benedictine monastery, exploring its opulent library filled with thousands of medieval manuscripts, its frescoed ceilings, and its beautifully manicured gardens overlooking the river. For those looking for a different pace, a guided bike ride along the Danube's scenic banks offers a wonderful way to experience the fresh air and breathtaking valley landscapes firsthand.
Day 4: Linz, Austria
The ship docks in Linz, Austria's vibrant cultural hub on the Danube. Today offers a variety of full-day excursions tailored to your interests. You can choose to explore Linz itself, walking through its historic main square and learning about its rich musical heritage. Alternatively, step into a real-life fairytale with a day trip to Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart and the famous setting for The Sound of Music, where you can wander through the beautiful Mirabell Gardens. Another option is a journey across the border to Český Krumlov in the Czech Republic, a remarkably preserved medieval town known for its winding river and storybook castle streets.
Day 5 - 6: Vienna, Austria
Spend two full days immersed in the imperial elegance of Vienna, Austria's storied capital. On your first day, explore the city's grand boulevard, the Ring Strasse, and the historic centre through a choice of walking or city tours, or join a guided bike ride along Vienna's excellent paths. The second day invites you to delve deeper into the city's royal past. Visit the spectacular Schönbrunn Palace, the former summer residence of the Habsburg monarchs, to admire its Baroque grandeur and vast gardens. You can also opt for a serene guided walk through the legendary Vienna Woods. Each evening, the city's rich musical heritage comes alive, offering a perfect backdrop for your Austrian adventure.
Day 7 - 8: Budapest, Hungary
Your cruise comes full circle as you return to Budapest for a grand finale. On Day 7, dive into the city's distinct culture with a tour divided between Buda and Pest. Climb Castle Hill to see the fairytale turrets of Fishermen's Bastion, or take an active hike up to the Citadel. As night falls, the ship sets sail for an unforgettable evening illumination cruise, watching the Parliament building and majestic bridges sparkle against the water. On Day 8, enjoy one final breakfast on board before disembarking.
