Itinerary:

Day 1: Ubud

Special Information
Please look for a note in the hotel lobby or ask reception where the welcome meeting will take place. If you can't arrange a flight that will arrive in time for the welcome meeting, you may wish to arrive a day early so you're able to attend. We'll be happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability). If you're going to be late, please inform the hotel reception. We'll be collecting your insurance details and next of kin information at this meeting, so please ensure you have all these details to provide to your leader.

Day 2: Ubud
After a briefing and bike check, set off for the first day of cycling (approximately 35 km). Begin at Ubud Palace and head north, passing rice fields and perhaps stopping to watch as the rice is planted or harvested. Most of today's route is uphill, but there are some nice flat and downhill sections too. For lunch, dine at a restaurant run by local resident Jero Pande, who doubles as a healer for the local community. After lunch, take a break from the bike and drive to the Tirta Empul temple, located in the Tampak Siring sub regency. Here you can see Balinese folk doing their worship (remember to wear a sarong here). Tirta Empul is quite popular because of its holy water, and many people come here to bathe. On the way to back to the hotel, stop in at Bumi Sehat Foundation, an Intrepid Foundation project aimed at reducing maternal and child morbidity and mortality in the community.

Day 3: Mount Batur/Kintamani
Start the day early and head from Ubud to Kintamani. The total distance is approximately 40 km, but you won't cycle the whole way; the bike ride begins from Bayung Gede. The route is mostly uphill. A stop will be made for lunch (optional) at Gunung Sari Restaurant. From here you can see glorious Mt Batur, as well as Lake Batur. Continue cycling to tonight accommodation in Kedisan, Kintamani. In the afternoon, hop in a boat for a quick visit to a most unique local village, Trunyan. What sets this village apart from others is its fascinating way of dealing with the deceased; instead of the conventional Hindu tradition of cremation, bodies are put under the 'Kayu Menyan' tree which is said to absorb the odour.

Day 4: Bedugul Lake
Cycle from Kintamani to Bedugul today (approximately 50 km). There's the option of climbing Mt Batur beforehand. Those that choose this optional activity will get up in very early morning (3 am) for the climb, which reaches 1717 metres above sea level. It's quite chilly at this early hour – usually somewhere between 8°C and 12°C, so dressing in layers is essential to deal with the sharp rise in temperature later on. A 15-minute drive leads to the starting
point, and the climb itself takes around two hours, with an additional 30 minutes to get to the summit if you choose (refreshments are available at the top). The sunrise rears its head at around 6:15 am, after which many cheeky monkeys show up in search of food. You can also visit the nearby cave, where the Balinese come to worship twice a year; from here you can see the steam of the crater rise. After an optional visit to local hot springs, the bike ride to
Bedugul begins.

Day 5: Lovina
Cycle from Bedugul to Lovina today (approximately 60 km). The track is mostly downhill and has some beautiful views to enjoy. First though, visit one of the main temples in Bali, Ulun Danu Baratan, just near the hotel. It is dedicated to Dewi Danu, the water goddess, and ceremonies are held here in the name of water supply to Central Balinese farmers. Spend around an hour checking out the temple, then visit the traditional market near the accommodation (time permitting) – a good place to pick up a mangosteen to snack on (or a durian, for those who can handle the aroma!). Arrive in Lovina, a laidback beachside town on the northern coast. Enjoy a free afternoon, then sit down to some dinner: delicious and authentic Balinese cuisine prepared by our friend Bu.

Day 6: Tanah Lot
Cycle from Lovina to Tanah Lot (approximately 40 km). The route starts from the hotel, heading south through the heart of the island to Tanah Lot. After cycling for around 10 km, stop and partake in some watersports. There are six kinds to choose from, so you're bound to find something to suit your tastes. After a refreshing ocean splash, arrive in Tanah Lot, visit Tanah Lot Temple (which translates literally 'island on the sea'). It's a popular but beautiful spot to see the sunset. Your accommodation tonight is a short drive from Tanah Lot.

Stroll along the beach, take a dip in the calm waters, or grab a well-earned drink in one of the small local bars. Sanur is a convenient place from which to embark on further travel. Perhaps head east and get off the beaten track on our Bali & Lombok: Hike, Bike & Raft trip.
