Take some great sunset selfies at the High-Level Bridge in Lethbridge, the longest and tallest railway bridge of its type in the world.
Day 4
Before you leave Lethbridge, visit the delightfully named Fort Whoop-Up replica fur trading fort on the edge of town, then head south through the small farming communities of Southern Alberta as you travel towards the border and into Montana and the town of Great Falls. The KOA here has a host of activities to keep everyone entertained, including a great waterpark. 175 miles to Great Falls. Spend time at the Lewis and Clark National Interpretive Centre in Great Falls and learn about how their expedition shaped the American West.
Day 5
Its time to continue south and head into the mountainous regions of Montana and its capital, Helena. The grand architecture and historic sites make it an interesting stop. Head on to Bozeman with its thriving arts scene and do not miss the Museum of the Rockies based on the edge of town. 185 miles to Livingston. See the Taylor Planetarium at the Museum of the Rockies which offers 30-minute shows with breath-taking views of the cosmos.
Day 6
Today, you are heading for Yellowstone National Park via the famous Beartooth Highway. Usually open late May to Mid-October, this wild and twisty All- American road is one of the most scenic drives in the country and climbs through the Beartooth Mountains with views of glaciers and alpine lakes to a dizzying 12,000ft elevation. As you enter the park, you will drive through the Lamar Valley, famous for its wildlife viewing before arriving at your stop for the night at Canyon Village Campground. 205 miles to Canyon Village. Visit the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone to see the spectacular waterfalls. Wildlife spots along the side of the road in the Lamar Valley.
Day 7 & 8
Spend the next few days enjoying the magnificence of the world's first National Park. The main park road is over 140 miles in total length, and you will often see traffic jams involving bear, bison and moose sightings, so it's not something you can complete and see all in one day. Therefore, we suggest at least a few days to explore properly. See Old Faithful shooting its thousands of gallons of water at predictable intervals. Visit the Norris Geyser Basin for the Steamboat Geyser and the Madison area for the famous and psychedelic colours of the Grand Prismatic Spring. TIP! Extend your stay for a few nights and include a visit to Grand Teton National Park.
Day 9
Its time to hit the road again and start your journey back into Montana. We suggest leaving the park via the West Yellowstone entrance and up Route 287. Stop at Virginia City to experience what this ghost town was like during the Gold Rush. The town has been restored and preserved as living reminders of the real Old West. On the way to the Missoula area for your overnight stop, visit Philipsburg and mine for Montana Sapphires. 250 miles to Missoula. Stop at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Centre in West Yellowstone to see and learn more about these exceptional animals.
Day 10
As you head north, your aim for the day is to reach West Glacier, the gateway to the western entrance of the mighty Glacier National Park. If you haven't seen enough Bison in Yellowstone, then be sure to stop at the National Bison Range along Highway 93. Continue up past Flathead Lake, the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River. Your home is the West Glacier KOA, located in a stunning setting with mountains and forests on your doorstep. 120 miles to West Glacier. Stop at the National Bison Range along Highway 93 home to between 350 & 500 of these magnificent animals
Day 11 & 12
After the thrill of the geothermic activity and wildlife of Yellowstone, now its time for the an equally stunning Glacier National Park. Spend time in the alpine meadows, rugged mountains and hikers paradise. Whilst most RVs cant be driven on the full length of the famed Going-to-the-sun road that crosses the highest peaks of the park, you can still drive parts of it to visit places like Lake McDonald or you can take advantage of the free shuttle bus that will take you along this awesome road. Whilst here visit the fantastic Big Sky Waterpark with an array of waterslides and heaps of fun for all the family. Hike and enjoy the amazing scenery around Glacier National Park. Visit the iconic Lake McDonald lodge and take a cruise on the lake. Spend the evening in Whitefish with its array of dining options.
Day 13
Today cross the park via US Rte 2 to the eastern side. This is arguably the more dramatic and wilder side of the park and where most of the 50 glaciers reside that the park is named and famous for. Cross the border in Canada to Waterton Lakes National Park. Unlike in the US, Canadian national parks do have small towns within the park boundaries and your stop for the night is at the campground in the townsite of Waterton Park. The campground is set right on the lakeshore and just a few minutes walk to the laid-back little town making it an ideal location to eat out. 150 miles to Waterton Park. Stop at the Many Glacier hotel for breath-taking views. Enjoy a host of dining options in Waterton Park and take in the views from the iconic Prince of Wales hotel set above the town.
Day 14
Time for a long-ish drive today and you head towards the Canadian Rockies. Your first stop of the day should be in the hip little town of Fernie. It is full of art galleries and coffee shops and has a very liberal and affluent feel to it. It also happens to be a mecca for mountain biking, with the biggest trail network in the region. If you are looking for some real kitsch, then stop at Kimberley for its Bavarian village feel and Canadas largest cuckoo clock. Continue to the highest- rated RV resort in the Canadian Rockies at the Fairmont Hot Springs Resort. 200 miles Fairmont Hot Springs. Go mountain-biking in Fernie. Visit the Bavarian themes shops in Kimberley.
Day 15
Head up highway 95 through the Columbia and Kootenay Valleys with the soaring peaks of the Rockies on one side and the Purcell Mountains on the other. Once you arrive in Golden, head east along the Trans- Canada highway over the Kicking Horse Pass and into the awe-inspiring Yoho National Park with its jagged peaks and alpine lakes before continuing to the Lake Louise area for the night. You have a choice of campgrounds in the area. 135 miles to Lake Louise. Spend time in Kootenay National Park with some great short hikes right off the highway, including a visit to the Stanley Glacier. Visit Yoho Valley and Lake OHara for stunning mountain scenery.
Day 16 & 17
Welcome to Banff National Park, arguably one of the most famous parks in the entire world. Spend 2 days here enjoying some of the 1500kms of hiking trails and the majestic scenery of Lake Louise and Moraine Lake and spend some time in Banff itself, undoubtedly, the capital of the Canadian Rockies. Take the Banff Mountain Gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountain for great views and some high-level hiking. Visit the famous Banff Springs hotel and grab a coffee and take in the views from the outdoor terrace. Visit the Banff Park Museum to learn more about the indigenous wildlife.
Day 18
By the time you get to today, you will be forgiven for thinking that maybe you have seen the best of the mountain scenery and stunning drives. Well you can think again! Today is one of those days that will live long in the memory as you drive and enjoy the Icefields Parkway. This stretch of road from Lake Louise all the way up to Jasper winds its way through the heart of the Canadian Rockies and is a never-ending succession of glaciers, vertigo-inducing mountain peaks and forests. It is about a 4hr drive but do stop at the some of the trailheads to get out and take those photos you will remember for years to come. Continue to Jasper and your choice of campgrounds. 145 miles to Jasper. Stop at the Bow Summit and Peyto Lake for iconic vistas. Stop at the Saskatchewan Crossing, known as a great place for wildlife spotting.
Day 19 & 20
Enjoy a few days in Jasper National Park. The almost quiet neighbour to the north. This park is bigger than Banff, Yoho and Kootenay parks combined and therefore does feel a bit more on the wilder side and certainly less commercialised that its fellow Canadian Rockies National Parks. The town of Jasper is quite small and compact so you can see everything here in a few hours. Visit Maligne Lake, the largest lake in the Rockies and take a cruise to Spirit Island for iconic views. Stop for a drink and lunch at the Fairmont Jasper Park lodge for that luxury Canadian lodge experience.
Day 21
Time to drive the Icefields parkway again as you start to make your way towards Calgary. Even though you are driving the same road again, you are in a for a treat as driving it in the opposite direction offers you a completely different set of magnificent views. We certainly suggest you stop at the Columbia Icefield. It is the largest glacial area in the northern hemisphere outside the Arctic Circle. Continue out of the Rockies and to your campground for the night, just a short distance from Calgary. 220 miles to Cochrane. Join a glacier tour in purpose-built vehicles and step foot on the Athabasca Glacier. Hang out 280 metres over the Sunwapta Valley on the glass-floored Glacier Skywalk.
