Introduction
Settled in 1639 an incorporated in 1784, Newport is one of the five most important settlements in the 13 colonies, sharing that distinction with Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Charlestown.
The city was founded as a haven for complete religious and political freedom and from the outset, Quaker and Jewish settlers lived harmoniously here. Newport was the birthplace of the Navy, and the constant flow of private and naval shipping from around the world added to the City's cosmopolitan atmosphere. The city also claims some of the most magnificent pre-1830's architecture in the world including the luxurious 'summer cottages' of the Vanderbilts, the Astors and the Belmonts. There are also a number of beautiful beaches, boating facilities, a breathtaking Cliff Walk, golf courses, museums, night clubs, jai alai, tennis and fishing - plus world class sailing conditions unequaled anywhere else in the Northern Hemisphere.
