Introduction

Dayton has an extraordinary heritage of innovation born of the skills and talents of a number of its citizens. Orville and Wilbur Wright were the first to build and fly a power-driven, heavier-than-air machine. James Ritty invented a mechanical money drawer that is now called the cash register. Poet Paul Lawrence Dunbar broke through racial barriers to write literature that was widely read by both white and black audiences. Charles Kettering invented a self-starter for automobiles. Visitors today can walk the streets these innovators walked, marvel at the dreams that they made real, and discover what it is about Dayton that makes it such a special place.
