They mean it when they say this is horse country. Lexington is to horses what Washington is to politicians. It is also referred to as bluegrass country (as in Kentucky bluegrass, the very same that grows on nearly every lawn in America).
Lexington is the second-largest city in the state, was founded in the late 1700s and became a cultural and wealthy focal point in the Alleghenies almost immediately thereafter. That still holds true today. It supports an art house movie theater, independent booksellers and a thriving, big business horse culture.
