Information about China

China is a fascinating and enchanting country of awesome size: home to more than a fifth of the world’s total population. With a recorded history which dates back over 5000 years, it’s no surprise that China offers a rich mix of cultural and historical sights. This vast country also encompasses a variety of contrasting landscapes from towering mountains to mighty rivers, sophisticated modern cities to timeless rural villages. And of course its world-renowned wonders such as the Great Wall, Forbidden City and Terracotta Warriors. No other country can be compared to China: it is totally unique and offers the ultimate holiday experience.

WHEN TO GO
Because of its size China experiences great climate diversity, but generally speaking the best
months for visiting China, weather-wise, are spring (March-April) and autumn (Sept-Oct), although there are fewer crowds in the winter. Beijing experiences extremely cold conditions from December to February when temperatures can fall below 0 degrees Celsius.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
While many dishes you’ll be offered in China may sound familiar, they taste little like the food from your average High Street take-away! Differing cuisine can be found in all provinces; such as
Cantonese with its huge variety if ingredients and Sichuan which is characterised by hot and peppery
dishes. International food is available in the main cities. Shanghai in fact ranks alongside London and New York for contemporary restaurants.

FESTIVALS
Chinese New Year (Feb) Although officially lasting only three days, many people take a week off to celebrate and feast! The Lantern Festival marks the end of the festivities: when houses are brightly lit, firecrackers are let off and the famous lion dances wind through the streets.
