Information about Nunavut

State Map of Nunavut

Introduction

Nunavut -- "our land" in the Inuktitut language -- has been home to Inuit for millennia and part of Canada for more than a century. Embracing both traditional knowledge and values and the new opportunities presented by technologies like the Internet, the Government of Nunavut now provides a widerange of services tailored to the unique needs of approximately 26,000 residents.

Nunavut abounds in wildlife. The mighty polar bear is one of many fascinating species up here that command respect and admiration. From vast migrating herds of caribou, to beluga whales, narwhals, seals, walruses and birds of every feather. This place is wild! Our national parks are nothing to sneeze at either. Vast, unconquerable lands, mountainous glaciers, towering icebergs.

Like one-of-a-kind art? You''ve definitely come to the right place. Inuit carvers aren''t just painstakingly sculpting a piece of soapstone, they are releasing the spirit caught within. How''s that for a topic of conversation? At least that''s how Inuit see it. From the melodious a-ya-ya singers, to weavers and sculptors, even traditional Inuit games ... each is world renowned, unique in its design, and an important part of Inuit identity. Not only is it beautiful, Inuit art can be quite useful, too.
